Planning Your Pontoon Boat Light Components

There are a few basic functions your lights should accomplish. You'll want great illumination during navigation, safety while moving around on deck, extra light for working at night, and you want your boat to look amazing. We've written an entire article about how to plan your light kit to illuminate the water, your work, and your deck. Check it out here: "Pontoon Boat Lighting Guide: How to Install the Best Lights" and discover the Black Oak LED advantage.

A Note About Safety and Navigation

Extra lighting, such as side LED bars, work lighting, and any visible deck lights, should not be operating or visible while your boat is underway. This is for everyone's protection because all the extra lights could confuse the visibility of your main navigation lights.

What are those lights? We cover them in our article, but here's a quick summary:

  • Red and green sidelights visible from a distance of at least two miles away—or if less than 39.4 feet (12 meters) long, at least one mile away—on a dark, clear night.

  • An all-round white light (if less than 39.4 feet long) or both a masthead light and a sternlight. These lights must be visible from a distance of at least three miles away on a dark, clear night. The all-round white light (or the masthead light) must be at least 3.3 feet (one meter) higher than the sidelights.

  • No other lights (including docking lights) may be used that could be mistaken for or interfere with those required above.

These are your main navigation lights. You can should mount them according to official instructions, such as these from the US Coast Guard's guides for navigation lights.
